📆 Annual Application Timeline

When to take action each month of the year, regardless of which programs you're targeting.

Oct – Nov
Apply now for next summer's premium positions: Oregon coast parks, Washington Cascades, popular COE lakes in the South and Midwest. Competition is highest for these. Don't wait until January.
November
Confirm winter positions (Arizona, Florida, Texas) if you haven't already. Winter programs fill slower than summer but best sites still go before December. Contact project offices directly.
December
Apply for spring COE positions (March–May starts). Follow up on summer applications you've submitted — rangers appreciate a polite check-in. Register on volunteer.gov if you haven't.
January
Last call for competitive summer programs. Many state parks formally open their volunteer application portals in January. Minnesota, Colorado, and Michigan DNR portals typically open January–February. Apply immediately when they open.
Feb – Mar
Apply for shoulder-season starts (April–May). USFS positions for spring often posted now. Finalize your winter position's checkout date and confirm dates in writing with your ranger.
April
Last chance for summer gap positions. Some positions that fell through or weren't filled are re-listed now. Good time to call parks directly. Begin planning your next winter's positions.
May – Aug
Active hosting season. Build relationships with rangers — they're your best reference for next year. Keep notes on what you like and don't like about your position for future planning.
September
Begin applying for winter positions starting October–December. Request a reference letter from your current ranger before departure. Review your season notes and decide on target regions for next year.
💡 Multi-Season Planning Tip
The most successful full-time hosts plan 2–3 seasons ahead. After your first season, ask your ranger for a written reference and contact 2–3 other rangers while your current season is still fresh. Warm leads carry over year to year.
